Murrumbeena House
Alterations & Additions
In the quiet suburb of Murrumbeena, a single-storey weatherboard dwelling has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis, defying heritage constraints and overlooking challenges to emerge as a contemporary and spacious two-storey family home. Innovative planning and design interventions have transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary, seamlessly blending period charm with modern luxury.
Upon entering, the curved steel archway at the end of the entry hall serves as a transitional portal, guiding visitors from the existing period style, characterised by timber floors and intricate skirting and cornices, into the realm of contrasting modernity. The juxtaposition of polished concrete, expansive windows, and minimalist design in the contemporary extension creates a captivating visual dialogue between the old and the new, while preserving the integrity of the original structure. The master bedroom, complete with a luxury ensuite, exudes an air of tranquility and opulence. The inclusion of a free-standing bath beneath a large skylight bathes the space in natural light, while the Juliette balcony adds to the sense of expansiveness, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.
The kitchen, adorned with stunning book-matched natural stone, serves as the focal point of the living space, commanding attention with its bold elegance amidst the minimalist surroundings. The free-standing Phillipe Chiminay fireplace, set against a feature brick wall, adds warmth and character to the contemporary interior.
